Setting Up Google Analytics 4 Using Google Tag Manager for eWeb

 

This article specifies how to set up Google Analytics 4 using Google Tag Manager for eWeb application.

Prerequisites

To set up Google Analytics 4 using Google Tag Manager for the eWeb application, complete the following steps:

Important! You must have administrator privileges to complete the Google Analytics 4 setup for your eWeb application.

  • Login to your Google Tag Manager account using https://tagmanager.google.com/.
  • If the account is not already created, create a new account. GTM
  • Enter the following details: Account Name, Country, Container name, and select the Target Platform as ‘Web’ and then click the Create button.GTM
  • On the Google Tag Manager Terms of Service Agreement page, accept the Service Agreement and continue. This will display the Workspace page with the GTM Account name.
  • On the Workspace page, copy the GTM Account name and save it for future use, as this will be used in System Option Setup in the NetForum iWeb application.GTM
  • Once you create the Google Tag Manager Account, log in to https://analytics.google.com/ and set up the account and property (if not already set up) by filling required fields.
  • Once the setup is finished, the Admin page will be displayed with Property.
  • Click the Web button on the Choose a platform section under the Data Streams category. GTM
  • On the Set up your web stream section, enter the eWeb URL in the Website URL field and stream name in the Stream name field, and then click the Create stream button.GTM
  • Once the stream is created, the Web stream details window displays. Copy the Measurement ID and save it for the future, as it will be required for Setup in Google Tag Manager.GTM
  • Once you save the Measurement ID, now go back to Google Tag Manager Workspace and add a new tag (if not already created) by clicking the Add a new tag link on the New Tag section.GTM
  • On the Untitled Tag page, click on the Tag Configuration window. This will display Choose tag type window.
  • On the Choose tag type window, select the Google Analytics: GA4 Configuration featured option.GTM
  • On the Tag Configuration window, enter the Measurement ID in the Measurement ID field that you copied from the Web stream details window.GTM
  • Once you enter the Measurement ID, now move down to the Triggering window and click on the Triggering window. This will display the Choose a trigger window.
  • On the Choose a trigger window, select all the checkboxes and then click the Add button.GTM
  • On the Untitled Tag window, click Save.
  • Now go to the Tags category on the Workspace page. The Tags section will display the newly created Tag.GTM

Creating tag for purchase event

To track any ecommerce purchase activity done on eWeb, you need to have ‘purchase’ tag added in the Google Tag Manager. The following steps will guide you in creating the ‘purchase’ tag:

  1. Open the Google Tag Manager container by clicking the icon on the Google Analytics site.GA4 purchase tag 1.png
  2. Under the Workspace tab, click the Tags category on the left side.
  3. Click the New button on the Tags form.GA4 purchase tag 2.png
  4. This will display the Untitled Tag form.
  5. Click the Tag Configuration and select Tag.GA4 purchase tag 3.png
  6. Click the Choose a tag type to begin set-up link. This will display a pop-up, under the Featured section, click Google Analytics option.                                                                               GA4 purchase tag 4.png
  7. From the displayed pop-up, click the Google Analytics: GA4 Event option.GA4 purchase tag 5.png
  8. Enter the Measurement ID in the field.
  9. Enter 'purchase' in the Event Name field.
  10. Under the More Settings and then Ecommerce, select the Send Ecommerce data check box.GA4 purchase tag 6.png
  11. For Data Source select the Data Layer.
  12. Click Save.
  13. Now move down to the Triggering section and click the Triggering window. This will display the Choose a trigger window.
  14. On the Choose a trigger window, click the Add icon to add new trigger.
  15. Click the Triggering Configuration section and on the Trigger Type field select the Custom Event option.
  16. Enter 'purchase' in the Event name field.
  17. On the This trigger fires on field, select the All Custom Event option.GA4 purchase tag 7.png
  18. Rename the trigger to 'purchase' and click Save. This will direct you to create tag page, click Save. Note that the newly added tag will be listed in the tag list.GA4 purchase tag 8.pngThis tag will be fired when you purchase a product on eWeb.
  • After updating the System Options, go back to Workspace of Google Tag Manager and click the Preview. A new tab will be displayed for Google Tag Assistant.
  • Enter the eWeb URL in the Your website's URL field and click the Connect button.GTM
  • A new window with eWeb URL will be displayed.GTM
  • Now, as you traverse on eWeb site, the entry will be displayed on the same window.GTM
  • Now go to analytics.google.com and then click the Admin > DebugView.GTM
  • Now, if you click on eWeb URL, which was opened earlier, and traverse on eWeb pages, the application hit will be displayed on the Debug Device.
  • Once your testing confirms that you are collecting data, go back to Google Tag Manager and click the Submit button.GTM
  • On the Submit Changes page, enter the version name and description in their respective fields and click the Publish button.GTM
  • Now, if you open the eWeb URL, the records will be traversed and displayed on Analytics in the Reports > Realtime section. As users start to use your eWeb application, you will start to see data in the Realtime report section.GTM
  • To see data in detail in Analytics, you need to wait for 24-48 hours to get the actual pages hit in the Reports section (Reports > Engagement > Pages and Screens).
